Herpes is the common term for infections caused by two types of a viral disease. Barrier protection methods, such as condoms, are the most reliable means of protection during sexual activity, but it should be noted that these methods only reduce the risk of infection, and are not able to prevent it entirely.

At this time there is no cure for either type of herpes virus, although there are treatments available. Typical treatments include antiviral medication to help shorten the duration of blister outbreaks. Antiviral medication is available in both oral and topical forms, and many are available in generic forms that can be purchased over the counter. Vaccines designed to prevent the transmission of herpes viral infection are currently undergoing clinical trials.

Herpes is a serious sexually transmitted disease that affects millions of individuals around the planet. At this present time, there are no known herpes cures. Only education and the practice of safer sex can protect people from this dreadful sexually transmitted disease.
