Understanding Cold Sore Herpes Outbreaks

Cold sore herpes or oral herpes is the most common form of the herpes virus. In fact, it has been reported that at least 80% of Americans have been exposed to herpes simplex, although some individuals have been successful in suppressing the disease. Oral herpes normally infects the mouth and face. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1, which is not the same strand of virus that leads to genital herpes.

A herpes cold sore is a small blister that is small and filled with fluid. After appearing, these blisters go through a cycle of phases before disappearing. They will develop, ulcerate and then form scabs before healing. These sores are normally confined to the area around the mouth and on the lips. Cold sores that develop on the nose, cheek, chin and in nostrils are less common but can occur.

Mouth herpes are extremely contagious and are usually contracted from skin to skin contact. Sores are the most contagious when the blisters have burst. After the initial exposure, 2 to 12 days may pass before symptoms begin to develop. After an individual becomes infected, the virus will remain in the body in a dormant or sleeping state. Cold sores will then reoccur when the virus becomes activated by a trigger.

There are multiple triggers that can potentially lead to a herpes cold sore outbreak. Fluctuation of hormones due to pregnancy or menstruation cycle will trigger the virus. Other factors include fatigue, skin irritation such as sunburn, variations in diet, and excessive alcohol use. Any malfunction of the immune system, illness or conditions involving a fever may also lead to the reappearance of cold sores. The affected skin around the lips will feel tingly and slightly irritated in the time leading up to the new blister.

Other parts of the body can be affected by herpes simplex. The best prevention for multiple areas of infection is to exercise proper hygiene. A person should not touch the affected area at any time. If accidental contact occurs, warm soap and water should be used to thoroughly clean the hands. The eyes, fingers and other parts of the body are susceptible to this type of infection.

Treatments for cold sore herpes are varied based on a patients medical history and severity of the outbreak. Topical ointments are quite popular and some are available without a prescription. These medications can actually shorten the length of the outbreak itself. Some people who suffer from the condition prefer natural remedies such as ice and black tea bags to relieve some of the bothersome side effects of the blisters.

There are many individuals who suffer from cold sore herpes. Finding the proper treatment should be done by consulting a medical professional. He or she will derive a specific plan of action for preventing outbreaks and making the sores disappear as quickly and painlessly as possible.
