Herpes Outbreak Symptoms

Herpes outbreak symptoms can cause embarrassment and physical strain on those who carry the herpes simplex virus. Understanding what herpes symptoms are, when they may occur, and how they can be shortened can help relive some of the confusion and pain for those suffer from this infection. Symptoms vary from person to person in both type and severity, so knowing what your symptoms are can you prevent spreading the infection to others.

Symptoms for both types of the herpes simplex virus, HSV1 and HSV2, are significantly more severe and uncomfortable during the first outbreak after infection. This is because the body has not yet developed antibodies to fight the infection. Symptoms appear between 2 and 20 days after infection and can last for approximately 2 weeks. Outbreaks occur more often within the first year of infection. As time passes, the frequency of herpes outbreaks lessen as the body adapts to the virus’s presence.

Herpes symptoms that affect the skin include inflammation, a burning or tingling sensation, blisters, cold sores, and discharge from the affected area. Blisters will scab and heal and do not typically result in scarring. Symptoms follow a specific cycle, starting with inflammation of the affected area. Next, the skin will produce liquid filled blisters and those blisters will open into ulcers. The ulcers will then heal, sometimes producing a crust in the process. Other symptoms that may occur but are harder to associate with herpes are sore muscles, lower back pain, fever, fatigue and swollen lymph nodes.

Before the onset of recurring herpes outbreak, many individuals experience prodromal symptoms. These symptoms are an indication that an outbreak is about to occur and it is at this time that individuals with herpes should request an antiviral medication from their health care provider. By starting the medication early, herpes symptoms can be decreased in severity and duration. Prodomal symptoms can include itching and tingling of the skin, numbness in the affected area, headaches and fatigue.

It is common that those carrying the herpes simplex virus do not show any herpes symptoms. This is called asymptomatic herpes. Though these individuals do not show any outward signs of infection, they are still capable of passing on the infection. It is therefore important for individuals to receive a clinical test for herpes as part of a regular check up with a health care professional. While unfortunate, herpes outbreak symptoms do get better with time and adaptation.
