Dealing with Herpes Simples Outbreak and Pesky Cold Sores!

Most people have experienced a cold sore or fever blister on their lip somewhere along the line, unaware it was actually the virus herpes simples causing those tingling, red and painful groups of tiny blisters on their lips. What can you do but wait it out, hoping it will go away, before that job interview, or that very important presentation you are scheduled to give next week?

While many of us choose the "it will go away on its own" method of healing, there are some things you can do to lessen the problem and speed up the healing process.

Have you ever had one cold sore, only to have a second one pop up as soon as the first one has healed? There is an easy fix for that. Replace your toothbrush. Your toothbrush can be home to the herpes virus for days, and by using the same toothbrush it will keep reinfecting you. Throw your toothbrush away at the first signs of a cold sore. Then throw it away again when the cold sore has healed. Starting fresh with a new toothbrush will significantly cut down on the chance of multiple sores. A wet toothbrush in a moist, warm environment such as the bathroom is a thriving breeding ground for the herpes virus. It's also a good idea to keep your toothbrush in a cool, dry place.

Pay attention to how you are putting the toothpaste onto your brush. Your toothpaste is probably contaminated with the virus also, because it came in contact with your toothbrush. Not only will the toothpaste reinfect you, but will also pass the virus along to anyone using the same tube of paste. Get rid of it!

Most doctors will tell you to just leave the cold sore alone and allow it to heal. That is sound advise on the most part, and it means to keep your fingers off of it. For some reason people are inclined to touch their lips when they first feel that tingling sensation indicating there is a blister on the way. By continually touching it you will be reinfecting yourself and aggrevating the problem.

There are certain foods to avoid that will only make matters worse such as chocolate, cola, peanuts, cashews, grain cereals, and beer. These foods contain the amino acid arginine, which the herpes virus needs for its metabolism.

By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can minimize the problem herpes simples can create, and lessen the chances of becoming reinfected.
