Common ways of diagnosing herpes sores are visual inspection of the affected area and blood tests. Blood tests are not always accurate. Sometimes a recent infection will not produce a positive result. Visual inspection of the affected area by a medical professional is the most common means of diagnosis. If the individual has a history of outbreaks this will also be taken into consideration.

Some treatments for herpes sores include antiviral drugs and topical solutions that lessen the pain of sores. No treatment offers a cure. They simply aim to lessen the severity of the outbreak. A well balanced diet and nutritional supplements are said to help reduce the number of outbreaks as well. Anyone who suffers with outbreaks should try to reduce stress as much as possible, eat a well balanced diet, and get plenty of rest. Such measures help the body's immune system fight off infection.
