How to Test For Herpes

Herpes is a viral infection characterized by symptoms that typically develop within three weeks after coming into contact with the virus, and the symptoms may be painful and debilitating or so mild that an individual may be unaware of even being infected. Nearly half of the adults in the United States probably have such antibodies, and a person may not realize that they are infected right away. It may in fact be as long as several years before a first outbreak, which typically signals that the condition actually exists. A test for herpes can determine whether the herpes simplex virus, or HSV, is present, and this may help in finding medicines that will relieve painful symptoms as much as possible.

How to test for herpes may be less important than wanting to remain anonymous, but knowing what you are dealing with may protect your partner, or at least help them prepare for any painful symptoms that they may have to deal with as well. In addition to determining whether your or a sex partner has a HSV infection, a test may be conducted to find out if it is the cause of mouth or genital sores, which type of virus is causing the sores, or whether a mother has passed the virus on to her newborn.

This virus is classified as herpes simplex one, or HSV 1, or herpes simplex two, or HSV 2. Fever blisters, or lip cold sores, are caused by type one, and are usually spread by sharing forks or spoons or by mouth to mouth contact. While type one may also cause genital sores, type two leads to sores around the penis and vagina, and causes the infection that is passed to babies delivered vaginally when the mother has genital herpes. HSV 2 is typically spread by sexual contact, but may occasionally cause oral sores. Although rare, herpes may even infect the brain or the eyes.

Tests are usually conducted to confirm sores in the genital area, but how to test for herpes may involve other bodily fluids such as tears, urine, blood, or spinal fluid. Accordingly, different tests are used depending upon the suspected type of herpes and the type of DNA that is used as well. Results may be ready within two hours, several days, or up to two weeks after testing. There is no cure for herpes, and once you are infected the virus remains in your body. There are, however, medicines that can alleviate symptoms and lessen the length of outbreaks as well.
